Orange to host tomorrow’s greats of classical music

19 March 2009

60 of Australia’s best teenage musicians are set to descend on Orange on Easter weekend for “Young Symphonists”, an intensive week-long orchestral training program run by Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO).

Held over the Easter school holidays, the program provides instrumental training and musical development within an inspirational and nurturing environment, where the focus is not only on learning core repertoire, but on spending time with other like-minded young musicians.

The Young Symphonists programs include two specialist streams, one for strings players and another for wind, brass and percussion players, and is aimed at musicians aged 12 – 17.

The programs will culminate with a series of free public performances on Saturday 18 March at the Derek Pigot Auditorium, Kinross Wolaroi School at 4:00pm and 7:30pm.

Under the guidance of internationally renowned violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch and leading Australian trumpeter David Elton (Principal Trumpet, WASO), Young Symphonists offers participants the opportunity to explore a broad spectrum of repertoire and develop skills for necessary for orchestral playing.

According to AYO’s CEO Colin Cornish, Young Symphonists has become one of Australian Youth Orchestra’s pivotal programs in the development of young instrumentalists.

“For many of the country’s best young players, this experience is their first opportunity to meet other talented musicians from all parts of Australia,” Mr Cornish said.

“AYO’s training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia's finest young musicians: from the emerging, gifted, school-aged student, to those on the verge of a professional career, providing a clear path from young player to professional musician.

“Young Symphonists has been the starting point for most musicians who progress through to play in AYO’s wide range of programs, and indeed countless alumni from this program and others are now playing in professional orchestras in Australia and overseas,” Mr Cornish said.
