Brisbane’s in style for tomorrow’s greats of music

40 of Australia’s best emerging musicians aged 18 - 25 are set to arrive in Brisbane on Easter weekend to commence an intensive week-long “Style Workshop” run by Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), focusing on performance practice of the Classical era.

After leading a successful Style Workshop in Melbourne over Easter in 2008, preeminent Australian keyboardist and music historian Geoffrey Lancaster AM returns due to popular demand to direct AYO’s 2009 Style Workshop.

The program will feature nine days of tutorials, masterclasses and rehearsals, where hand-picked participants will be encouraged to explore the conventions of the classical style within the context of masterworks by Mozart and Haydn.

The students’ hard work will culminate in a free public concert at the Queensland Conservatorium, Southbank, offering Brisbane music lovers a chance to see tomorrow’s greats of classical music perform live.

AYO CEO Colin Cornish said the aim of the Style Workshop program is to give participants the opportunity to learn how to interpret classical music notation, build stylistic awareness and explore musical customs of the time.

“Most participants in this program are members of our flagship orchestra ensemble, the Australian Youth Orchestra,” said Mr Cornish.

“The students embarking on this program are already playing at a very high standard, however the Style Workshop gives them a chance to develop a deeper understanding and awareness, and the history of this program has shown it produces very impressive results,” he said.

AYO offers around a dozen training programs each year, with a training pathway designed to nurture the musical development of Australia's finest young musicians: from the emerging, gifted, school-aged student, to those on the verge of a professional career.

AYO will be holding auditions in Brisbane in August for their 2010 programs, which will include a three-continent international tour.  Prospective applicants can find out more by visiting the AYO website ayo.com.au, or calling 1300 668 500.
