With a three-continent international tour and the chance to be part of a fully staged opera production, 2010 is the year to stake your place in The Australian Youth Orchestra.

The Australian Youth Orchestra is made up of the best young musicians from across Australia, giving you the opportunity to perform in a truly national orchestra.   Each year auditions are held for all positions in the orchestra, providing renewed opportunity for you to strive for selection and advancement, and adding a constant element of dynamism and vigour to the program.

February 2010: Peter Grimes

West Australian Opera and Perth International Arts Festival
in association with the Australian Youth Orchestra present PETER GRIMES by Benjamin Britten

This is your chance to experience playing in the pit of a fully staged professional opera production. One of the greatest operas of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes will be given its Perth premiere in a new co-production of Opera Australia, Houston Grand Opera, West Australian Opera and Perth International Arts Festival. Created by acclaimed Australian director Neil Armfield and conducted by Richard Mills, Peter Grimes stars Grammy Award-winning American tenor Antony Dean Griffey, who has received critical and popular acclaim for his performances in leading roles at major opera houses around the world.

THE CONDUCTOR

Richard Mills conducts all of Australia's leading professional orchestras and is one of the country’s most frequently commissioned and performed composers.  He is currently Artistic Director of West Australian Opera.

July 2010: International Tour

There is no better way to realise the excitement of life as a professional musician than to embark on an international tour.  In 2010 AYO is hitting the road on an exciting three-continent tour across Australia, China and Europe, with celebrated international conductor Sir Mark Elder.  This tour marks AYO’s 20th international tour and is set to be our most ambitious yet.  Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the unforgettable feeling of walking on stage to play in some of the most world’s most prestigious concert halls.

THE CONDUCTOR
Sir Mark Elder is Music Director of the Hallé since September 2000.  He regularly appears with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic.

What would you do with $10,000 to help you realise your musical ambitions?  AYO can help.  In 2010, AYO will be awarding $10,000 cash scholarships to three outstanding musicians aged 18 – 25 selected for the Australian Youth Orchestra.
