Colonial Foundation and Accenture Australia Foundation Scholarships
The path to becoming a professional musician can be tough… and expensive. The AYO is committed to ensuring Australia’s most talented young musicians have every opportunity to succeed in their aim to becoming one of tomorrow’s greats. In line with this commitment, The AYO is pleased to offer three AYO Scholarship opportunities for 2010.
The $10,000 AYO Scholarships were introduced in 2009 for three outstanding musicians selected to play in The Australian Youth Orchestra, to assist with all the costs involved in making your way to becoming a professional musician, such as the purchase and/or maintenance of instruments, AYO participation fees, study costs and travel expenses for instrumental lessons or auditions.
All musicians aged between 18 and 25 who are selected for The Australian Youth Orchestra will be eligible for the AYO Scholarships. Full details of conditions and how to apply will be provided once offers have been made for the Australian Youth Orchestra.
There will be three Scholarship opportunities available in 2010. Two of these scholarships are made possible by the Colonial Foundation Trust and one by The Accenture Foundation. Each Scholarship will be worth $10,000 cash and will be awarded to outstanding musicians selected for the Australian Youth Orchestra. If you have received an offer for a position in the AYO in 2010 and intend to accept you are eligible to apply. Applications close Friday 27 November 2009.

Dorothy Fraser Scholarship
Aware of the difficulties facing young women who embark on a career in classical music, the late Dorothy Fraser entrusted her estate to The Australian Youth Orchestra, for the sole purpose of supporting further study by female students of an orchestral instrument. As a result, a scholarship was established in 1993, which provides an award of up to $20,000 to winners of this prestigious biennial scholarship.
Open to outstanding female participants of AYO programs, applications for the 2010 Dorothy Fraser Scholarship will be by audiovisual recording only. The adjudication will be made by The Australian Youth Orchestra’s Artistic Advisory Committee, comprising some of Australia’s leading musicians, teachers and administrators. The criteria for this selection will be based primarily on the standard of each applicant’s performance on the supplied audiovisual recording. However, it is important that the application is supported by appropriate written materials, outlining a demonstrated and established course of study. The adjudication process of the Dorothy Fraser Scholarship is entirely separate to The Australian Youth Orchestra’s national auditions for performance-based programs.
No application fee is payable to submit an application to the Dorothy Fraser Scholarship and applications close on Friday 28 August 2009. No extensions will be granted to this deadline. Winners of the 2010 Dorothy Fraser Scholarship will be advised in writing by 11 December 2009. Applicants do not need to be a participant in 2010 but must be a past participant of AYO programs.
