Australia’s best young chamber musicians descend on Armidale

4 September 2009

The Australian Youth Orchestra will transform Armidale into a hive of chamber music activity throughout September when 44 young musicians from around the country take up residence at the New England Conservatorium of Music as part of the AYO Chamber Music Camp.

Rehearsing and performing as either newly formed string quartets, or as part of an existing quartet, the musicians will receive expert tuition from Music Director Anthony Marwood (Artistic Director, Irish Chamber Orchestra), and three ensembles-in-residence, the Goldner String Quartet, Elias String Quartet and Flinders Quartet. Each AYO string quartet will perform in one of four free concerts from the 2-4 October at the Armidale Town Hall.

“The AYO Chamber Music Camp is a great opportunity for talented young, chamber musicians to finesse their skills and access new performance abilities under the guidance of prestigious, well established chamber musicians” says Colin Cornish, CEO of the AYO.

“These young musicians are very excited to be participating in this program in Armidale and we welcome the local community to come and support them at the four free performances”, he says.

The 2009 AYO Chamber Music Camp is close to home for three of the young musicians, Eleanor Streatfeild (cello),a teacher at NECOM, Lachlan O’Donnell (violin) a student at Griffith University in Brisbane and Stephanie Arnold, (cello) currently advancing her music studies in Melbourne, but who will return to her hometown as part of the Euphoria Quartet.  All three young musicians are delighted to be able share their love of music with family and friends attending the local Armidale concerts.

AYO Chamber Music Camp is designed to give aspiring chamber musicians, aged 18 – 28, the opportunity to develop their chamber music skills under the guidance of some of the world’s finest chamber musicians. Over 10 days, the musicians will participate in masterclasses with the ensembles-in-residence, intensive rehearsals and hear the professional groups in private performances.

This program is made possible through the support of the Colonial Foundation Trust.
