Acceptance into the Australia Youth Orchestra is an acknowledgement of excellence in orchestral performance. Join Australia’s finest young musicians and indulge in an opportunity to further your skills, knowledge, and expertise with leading tutors and conductors.

In 2016 AYO’s 22nd international tour will take place. Members of the Australian Youth Orchestra will be immersed in the rich experience of a two week European residency followed by performances in two of the world’s newest concert halls in Beijing and Shanghai, before finally sharing the success of the Orchestra’s overseas achievements with audiences back home in Australia. Members of the Orchestra will be joined by two leading guest artists – conductor, Manfred Honeck and pianist Hélène Grimaud. They will also work closely with a prestigious team of mentors from leading European orchestras.

In the lead up to this unique touring experience, the Orchestra’s February season sees the return of exciting young French conductor, Alexandre Bloch to lead what promises to be an unforgettable performance of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.

Alexandre Bloch CONDUCTOR

Admired for his enthusiasm and energy, Alexandre Bloch was recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Dusseldorf Symphoniker. The French Conductor came to international attention as winner of Donatella Flick’s LSO Conducting Competition in October 2012. In the 14/15 season. Alexandre Bloch made a number of debuts including Seoul Philharmonic, Dusseldorf Symphony and Norwegian Radio. Following highly-successful debuts across the 13/14 season - he returned to Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBCNOW, Ulster Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Poznan Philharmonic, Musikollegium Winterthur and NWD Philharmonie. Forthcoming plans include returns to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

Manfred Honeck CONDUCTOR

Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 2008, received his musical education in his native Austria. Several years as member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera have given his conducting a distinctive stamp. He began his career as the assistant of Claudio Abbado in Vienna. After early posts in Zurich, Oslo and Leipzig he became Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and, subsequently, the Staatsoper Stuttgart. Much acclaimed for his successful work in Pittsburgh, he is  also high in demand as guest conductor and has conducted the leading orchestras around the globe.

Hélène Grimaud PIANO

Hélène Grimaud is undoubtedly a multi-faceted artist. Her deep dedication to her musical career, both in performances and recordings, is reflected and reciprocally amplified by the scope and depth of her environmental and literary pursuits. Throughout this season, orchestral engagements include her return to the Berlin Philharmonic with Valery Gergiev, Orchestre national de Lyon with Leonard Slatkin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Grimaud is also an ardent and committed chamber musician who performs frequently at themost prestigious festivals and cultural events with a wide range of musical collaborators.
