About AYO

The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) has a reputation for being one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative training organisations for young pre-professional musicians. Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia’s finest young instrumentalists across metropolitan and regional Australia: from the emerging, gifted, school-aged student, to those on the verge of a professional career. AYO presents tailored training and performance programs each year for aspiring musicians, composers, arts administrators and music journalists aged 12 to 30.

How should I choose a program?

Each of our programs caters for Australia’s best young musicians at different stages of their development. Many participants start as young as twelve and follow the AYO training pathway from start to finish, and some come along to programs intermittently. AYO offers the flexibility to pick and choose the programs that suit you best, and we recommend that you apply for all programs you are eligible and available for. There’s plenty to choose from, including a range of both performance-based and non-instrumental programs

Changes in 2021

Due to the uncertainty surrounding travel and large gatherings at this time and into 2021 we have been closely monitoring the restrictions around travel and large gatherings across Australia, and the uncertainty around when these may lift has led to some adjustments to our planned 2021 programs. These changes include the creation of two new programs, AYO Autumn Music Camp and AYO Spring Music Camp, which will continue the great tradition of AYO National Music Camp held each summer.

The two camps will provide high quality orchestral and chamber music experiences for young musicians aged 12 to 22 in lieu of the traditional AYO National Music Camp and AYO Young Symphonists in 2021. We plan for the return of National Music Camp in January 2022. Read more about adjustments to AYO’s 2021 offerings in the wake of COVID-19.
