About the tour

Welcome to the 2019 AYO International Tour Hub!

Since 1970, touring overseas has given AYO the opportunity to connect with the global community, with the country’s best young musicians representing Australia as cultural ambassadors.

At the heart of every AYO program is the chance for musicians to work alongside inspirational conductors and artists, push the boundaries of their own learning, and form lifelong friendships with people that will later become their colleagues and professional network. These benefits are, in a way, intensified on an international tour, with musicians coming together for four weeks in pursuit of a common goal.

The orchestra will spend two weeks in the Netherlands completing an immersive residency at Akoesticum in Ede, before embarking on a concert tour of prestigious venues and music festivals in Germany, France, the Netherlands, China and Australia. Under the baton of conductor Krzysztof UrbaƄski, the musicians will tackle a diverse scope of orchestral repertoire; from Mozart, to Shostakovich, to a work by Australian composer Holly Harrison. Joining them along the way are guest artists Daniel Müller-Schott, who will perform Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1; and pianist Jan Lisiecki, who will join the orchestra to play Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2, and Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1.

On a historic note, 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s 1979 tour, when AYO became the first Australian orchestra to perform in China, and we’re delighted to be returning this year to perform in Beijing and Guangzhou.

It is thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors that the cost of running an international tour can be met. These contributions have also allowed us to offer the program at a subsidised rate for all musicians, and to ensure that all eligible musicians are able to participate in our programs regardless of financial and geographic barriers through a generous financial assistance program. We are incredibly grateful to those who have donated to AYO’s International Tour Fund, and to our Season Partner, Singapore Airlines.

Whether you follow our tour activities on social media, read our updates here on the tour hub, or happen to be in town for one of our overseas concerts, we look forward to sharing our journey with you along the way.
