Australian Youth Orchestra   

The Australian Youth Orchestra is a twice-yearly program of orchestral music-making formed from the best young musicians across Australia. A truly life-changing experience, selection is an acknowledgment of excellence at a national level and embodies the future of classical music in Australia.


Through the AYO February and July Seasons, you will be given a taste of the magical possibilities available in today’s world of orchestral music-making, whilst working with the finest conductors and soloists in the world.


As a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra you will:

  • join the best musicians across Australia in a residential program including accommodation and meals
  • perform in prestigious venues around Australia
  • receive world-class guidance from industry leaders, thinkers and innovators
  • collaborate on a youthful and unique approach to timeless classics
  • support premieres of Australian and contemporary works

Audition requirements

All instrumentalists are required to attend a live audition


Perform a set of AYO orchestral excerpts and a short piece of your choice

Panel assessment criteria

- Clearly demonstrates the applicant’s technical proficiency

- Emphasises the applicant’s musicianship

- Perform contrasting musical material

- No more than five minutes in length
