THE LAUNCH OF AYO WINTER SEASON ONLINE

This month we’ve moved into the virtual realm to deliver AYO Winter Season Online! The AYO musicians have taken part in sessions developing practice techniques and performing challenging orchestral excerpts to tutors via Zoom. The season will also include a range of professional development sessions, featuring renowned conductors, Ben Northey and Elim Chan.

Although we were unable to see our face-to-face programs come to fruition, this online initiative opens the possibilities of making music together again in the wake of the pandemic.

THE SESSIONS

Orchestral Skills Workshop

These tutorials will be led by experienced orchestral musicians and will cover practice technique along with ensemble and leadership skills. AYO musicians and tutors will have the chance to perform together and discuss stylistic and technical challenges in the repertoire.

Clarinet Orchestral Skills Workshop, with tutor Chris Tingay

This online remote training has allowed us to engage with tutors both around Australia and across the globe including David Elton, Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra, Tobias Lea, Principal Viola of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Antonio Neilley-Menéndez de Llano, Solo Tubist of the Mälmo Opera Orchestra, Sweden.

Audition Excerpts Class

These sessions will give AYO musicians the opportunity to attend a masterclass in an online environment to work on audition excerpts. As musicians perform, tutors will review and provide advice on the challenges of each excerpt, helping musicians to develop essential skills for orchestral auditioning.

Double Bass Workshop with tutor, Phoebe Russell

Professional Development Sessions

Professional development is an important part of all AYO programs, and provides AYO musicians with the opportunity to attend Q&As with professionals in the industry. In this online webinar, we will welcome Alex Timcke, professional counsellor and Principal Timpanist with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, to speak about mindfulness and mental health management for young musicians.

Conductors Ben Northey and Elim Chan

AYO will also present Q&A sessions featuring two renowned conductors: Ben Northey, Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor in Residence of the MSO, and Elim Chan, Chief Conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Both conversations are hosted by QSO conductor Guy Noble.

As we launch AYO’s first online season, we look forward to sharing more with our community and continuing to bring new dynamic and distanced opportunities to our musicians in the future.
