Vicki Philipson

AYO International Tour 1979

In 1975 at age 14, Vicki toured with the New Zealand Youth Orchestra to China and Europe. The following year she moved to Australia to study oboe performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. She took part in tours to Europe with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra in 1976 and to China in 1979 with the Australian Youth Orchestra.

Vicki graduated in 1979 and was appointed Principal Oboe with State Orchestra Victoria (formerly The Elizabethan Theatre Trust Orchestra).

From 1980-84 she furthered her studies with Hans-Jorg Schellenberger at the Karajan Academy in Berlin. During this time Vicki was a guest oboist with both the Berlin Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, and she also toured extensively with the German Youth Orchestra.

In 1984 Vicki was appointed Associate Principal Oboe with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a position she held until 2013. She has also played regularly with Australia Pro Arte and the Academy of Melbourne, as well as teaching at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Since leaving the MSO, Vicki is now concentrating on her great love of watercolour painting as a botanical artist. From 2014 her paintings have been accepted for the Art of Botanical Illustration exhibitions in Melbourne, and in 2016 she received a prestigious Celia Rosser Award for three of her paintings. One of these was chosen for the front cover of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens calendar for 2018.
